Get On Up
05:09
|
|||
I was born on a spaceship called Rock N Roll
We were traveling through the silence of a giant black hole
But at that moment we discovered the lost galaxy of Soul
For a time we left gravity up to a matter of chance
We had no rhythm and we didn't even know how to dance
When our ship touched ground we sang together in a trance:
Get on up and start movin'
Get yourself up and start movin'
So we moved from the ship to the grass of the ground
We were pleased with the world that we had found
for what we had was built on the foundation of sound
I was born on a spaceship called Rock 'N' Roll
I grew up in the lost galaxy of Soul
until I found you, my body was not completely whole
Get on up and start movin'
Get yourself up and start movin'

Parachutes
04:07
|

I woke up
thought I would feel my best
but this feeling I'm feeling feels like the rest
open up
and my mind feels hazy
it's days like today where the whole world is lazy
don't give up
sometimes you succumb to routine
stuck in a rut so you better break clean
pack it up
and don't look back now baby
you gotta say “yes.” can’t get by with just “maybe.”
parachutes, parachutes,
are taking their time but I'm gonna be all right
parachutes, parachutes
what I'm seeing, I've seen, but the end is not in sight
parachutes, parachutes
are opening up: all I see is the sunlight
parachutes, parachutes
just because you fall doesn't mean that it's not flight
I woke up
thought I’d be put to the test
but this feeling I’m feeling feels like the rest
open up
can’t afford to think crazy
it's days like today when the whole world is lazy
don’t give up
prevailing is hard but you know
you gotta get out to have somewhere to go
pack it up
and don’t look back now baby
you gotta say “yes.” can’t get by with just maybe

I Should Have Warned You
06:46
|
|||
Do you ever wake up dreaming about the woman who met you?
Do you ever go to bed thinking about how easy she could forget you?
Well you don't know, you really don't know.
You don't know because life moves slow.
You don't know, you really don't know.
You don't know because life moves slow.
Same conversation, different day.
Ask yourself why you feel that way.
Woke up and I had the same start.
At the end of the day it'll pull you apart.
I'm sorry
I should have warned you
I didn't mean to fall in love
I'm sorry
I should have warned you
I didn't mean to fall in love
Do you ever drive to work thinking about the games you play for love?
Do you ever go home worrying about if it was enough?
Well you don't know, you really don't know.
You don't know because life moves slow.
You don't know, you really don't know.
You don't know because life moves slow.
We shouldn’t have kissed without thinking about
if we could afford it.
And we shouldn't have kissed without thinking about
if we would reward it.
You don't know because life moves slow.
You don't know, you really don't know.
You don't know because life moves slow.
I'm sorry
I should have warned you
I didn't mean to fall in love
I'm sorry
I should have warned you
I didn't mean to fall in love

Tornadoes
06:12
|
|||
It started out cool but it got really hot.
She had her glasses on. My place I forgot.
Dark blue jeans with a red, long-sleeved tee.
She was reading my mind and challenging me.
What could she find?
Who did I want her to be?
Nothing made much sense from what she looked like. . .
She had her sneakers on and her sleeves rolled up.
She was getting some sugar for the coffee in her cup.
I was staring cause I couldn't let it go.
She glanced back at me. Was she putting on a show?
Would she stay or leave? Well I just had to know.
I felt something inside and remembered this refrain:
Watch out for tornadoes!
Just like a movie, it happened so fast.
We made a connection when she could have passed.
Something was stirring and driving my fear.
She got close to me and whispered in my ear,
"Why don't we grab the check so we can get on outta here?”
Before I knew it we were on the road.
Passenger seat: she won't quit.
I forgot. How could I forget?
She wound me up and let me spin.
I thought I’d start over and begin again.
Time had passed. She made me turn.
How can I change if I cannot learn?
I felt something inside and remembered this refrain:
Watch out for tornadoes!
Open road: all alone.
Empty load, no telephone.
I see the stars and I breathe the air.
How could my life have such little care?
Will there be another love? Will this life be fair?
I feel something inside and remember this refrain:
Watch out for tornadoes!

Michael Told Me

Michael told me to forget the plan
Michael told me to be a man
If you feel like you're dead, feel alive instead.
Yes, that's what Michael said
Michael went out last night.
He almost got in a bar fight.
It's not that I've sunk, I just get drunk, ok?
Michael stayed up too late.
Decided to bail on his date.
He said "Girls can be found all around town. I don't care!"
Michael told me to forget the plan.
Michael told me to be a man.
If you feel like you're dead, feel alive instead.
Yes, that's what Michael said.
Michael surfs the net at work.
He never feels like a jerk.
It's time to be spent to get money for rent, ok?
Michael took a break today.
He thinks that cigarettes are ok.
It's food that i want and black water in my cup all day.
Michael told me to forget the plan.
Michael told me to be a man.
If you feel like you're dead, feel alive instead.
Yes, that's what Michael said.
Michael fell asleep on the train.
He thought he had gone insane.
Sometimes I ride, sometimes I hide, but I'll live.
Michael was unemployed.
He thought he had filled that void.
He said "Do what you love and love what you do, ok?"
Do what you love and love what you do, ok?
Michael told me to forget the plan.
Michael told me to be a man.
If you feel like you're dead, feel alive instead.
Yes, that's what Michael said.
If you feel like you're dead, feel alive instead.
Yes, that's what Michael said.

She was sweet around the edges but she didn’t care
about the way that she looked or how she did her hair.
We were in college and we talked about God
but the time we spent together was too damn flawed.
She told me not worry as we ran away.
Straight from the book – she always knew what to say.
It was getting dark so I had to pretend.
She said “let’s get drunk and we can be friends”
Hurt me.
I won’t slow
.
But I can’t play
.
I won’t go.
I can’t stay.
Drinking bourbon on a Sunday night
I was crying and bitching about life being fair.
I had a lotta issues but she didn’t care.
We were in college and I treated her right
.
And we talked and we talked well into the night.
I told her that I loved her as I fell to the ground
but her silence was louder than the loudest sound.
It was time to be easy.
It was time to be strong.
I ended up loving and I ended up wrong.
Hurt me.
I won’t slow.
But I can’t play.
I won’t go.
I can’t stay.
I won’t go.
I can’t stay.
I won’t go.
I can’t stay.

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina
His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
