about

Beneath the Ice of Europa came about after I was commissioned by the South Carolina Philharmonic to compose a string quartet for their principal players. They decided to put together a program and wanted some local composers to be represented, as well. (The quartet performed a piece by John Fitz Rogers, one of my teachers, marking the first time a piece of my own music “shared the stage” with one of his.) The piece I composed for the quartet was almost entirely made up of improvisatory sections. It was a flop. I had an opportunity to compose for a group and was too focused on doing something different by using a computer-generated track with directionless sounds and effects. The string writing suffered. Your electronic track should never be more important than your instrumental part.
After the premiere I put the piece away. It needed time away from my brain. When the material resurfaced, I decided to re-work it and add electric guitar. I’m always interested in performing new classical music on electric guitar, and I thought the electronic material would be perfect for it. Europa is a moon of Jupiter covered in ice that may still contain life in its ocean beneath the surface. I felt like this title accurately portrayed the intense sounds of plunging into a deep, icy, alien sea.

about

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina

His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
