about

I wrote my first computer-generated piece in 2007 and called it Troglobite. I was an undergraduate at USC and got really excited about computer music. You have control over so much as you’re writing a piece, and can create any sound without worrying about how to notate it. A year later, I added saxophone and re-named it Cave of the Lighted House (the name of a cave in Mexico where toxic gasses and sulfuric acid have replaced air and water, to which its inhabitants have adapted). This piece sounds like what I think that cave would sound like. This was also the first time I wrote a score in graphic notation, did not use time signatures or bar lines, and instructed the performer to improvise at various moments throughout the piece.
Andre North had performed this piece previously at a bar in Columbia and did some amazing things with it. I knew that I wanted this piece on the album, and I knew he’d make it his own. Luckily for me, his musical decisions were beyond what I imagined. He was so prepared and flexible and truly a joy to work with. This was the hardest piece to mix, and having him give such a convincing performance was all the more fuel to make it as right as I could.

about

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina

His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
