about

Every album needs a break-up song. Or maybe a love song. Some days Go Forth is both for me. I recorded processed guitar sounds, sounds from an old, five-octave Yamaha keyboard, sounds exported from the “Animoog” app for iPhone and more. My approach was much more focused on re-creating a “popular music” sound and I almost immediately had hours of material to sift through. When Reg Bain and I were editing this piece, we often spoke about the sounds as if they were on a rock song. Phrases like “Pink Floyd-y,” “thumpin’,” and “power chords,” consistently came up while working on Go Forth.
I approached Stephanie Beinlich about recording Go Forth because I knew she’d be game for something she’d never done before. Her voice is also incredibly powerful, and I needed that for this prose-free, multi-movement piece that straddled classical and popular music. Once I listened to our initial recordings, I knew this would be a strong piece, and it couldn’t have been that without her.

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina

His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
