about

I composed Hypnagogia: Between Wakefulness and Sleep in 2009, the year after I graduated. I knew I wanted a piece that was more subdued than Cave of the Lighted House and something dreamy. This is the only piece I’ve composed using only sounds from Max/MSP. I instantly thought the smooth, but at times airy, sound of the flute would pair perfectly with the electronic sounds. I called Jennifer Parker-Harley to ask her to recommend a student performer, but she instead volunteered herself! I was ecstatic, if not embarrassed, that I hadn’t composed the piece with her in mind, but the improvising and the multiphonics brought about much discussion and collaboration.
When we recorded the piece, we realized how differently we needed to approach Hypnagogia. Performing it live was spontaneous and full of possibilities, but this would be set in stone. We had to workshop the piece, and Jennifer couldn’t have been more patient and open to experimenting. In spending so much time on details, we captured a definitive moment in the studio that elevated the piece significantly, and I could not imagine this piece on the record without her.

about

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina

His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
