about

In 2010, Brad Edwards asked me to compose a piece consisting of drones so he could improvise freely. Composing the piece would be simple, but reserving so much time for improvisation would be a challenge. There’s a constant push and pull when you decide to include open sections specifically designated for improvising in your music. Improvising doesn’t sit well with some composers. After all, as a composer, you’re in charge of the roadmap, and telling performers essentially to find their own way is risky. I’ve been improvising for longer than I can remember, so I’m comfortable with it. As the piece developed, however, the sounds reminded me of discomfort. The sounds in the piece reminded me of being underwater, and that something didn’t feel right. Perhaps it’s the first sound in the piece that made me think of a giant, underwater spill, but I had my title, Oceans of Oil, very soon after finishing the piece. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010 left me astonished and worried, with a growing fear that humans’ impact on the earth is irreversible. I felt like this piece accurately portrayed these feelings, and that leaving so much up to the performer would perpetuate my feelings of the unknown. Luckily, Brad’s approach was in synch with my interpretation, and he did a great job of preserving the vibe while clearly making it his own.

about

George Fetner (and the Strays) Columbia, South Carolina

His guises have included stormy Britfolk songwriter (Some Things We’ll Change) and avant-garde composer (Beneath the Ice). But Fetner seems most natural fronting The Strays, a rangy and loose-limbed rock ‘n’ roll ensemble that’s built for a good time: Swirling Hammond swells, greasy Tom Petty-isms, bubbly pep — these are the calling cards of a songwriter built to bridge crowds. edited, Free Times ... more
